Rated 1 out of 5 by from Can't Start I have no idea how well this trimmer works, because I am unable to get it started. When demonstrating the unit in the store, the store employees also had trouble getting a different FS38 started. I did not purchase that one, instead opting for another one. But the one I brought home does not start any better.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Pain to start Had an echo for about 4 years. It was so easy to start but I was always having to add twine. It finally went to trimmer heaven. Have stihl blower that starts on second pull so figured would get a trimmer. Wanted something lighter weight as I'm a 63 year old woman and husband is 70 but not real well. Dealer serviced it and when we picked up started it with no problem. Also bought the replacement head. Got it home couple days later was going to use it and it took me and my husband taking turns after about 20 pulls to start. Figured it was new but it is still the same. Wish I would not have bought this trimmer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from bad I hate it it hasn't ran since the day I got it, it won't start and if you do get it started it last maybe a min and somehow I lost my receipt so I can't take it back

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Big hunk of crap If you like spending 30 or more minutes having to just get this weed eater started this is for you. * not much power* doesn’t start easily* doesn’t cut wellI got this because I heard STIHL makes a good product, and I thought this was a good deal at the time. I understand this isn’t there most expensive product but that shouldn’t matter. I don’t have a massive yard and just need to cut a little but if it’s having this much problems doing that. I will not be purchasing anything from STIHL again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from String Head Is Of Poor Quality I had a Homelite trimmer for about 20 years and it was always a pain to start but once it was running it did what it suppose to do, trim the grass. It started leaking fuel so I thought it was time to replace the Homelite. I selected the Stihl FS38 mainly because of Stihl's reputation. That was a mistake & I wish I had read some of the reviews concerning the string head - the best words I can come up with to describe it is - it sucks. This trimmer starts easy & runs great but I spend as much time or more messing with the string as I do trimming the grass. The green string lasts about 2 minutes & the head will not feed the string out so I have to stop and manually feed the string out. I've only used this thing twice & I'm now wishing I had used my money repairing the Homelite instead of buying the Stihl. I gave it 2 stars only because it starts easy & the motor runs great. Buyer beware.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad cutting heads, won't extend. I bought this trimmer (FS 38) about a year ago from the D&B store in Nampa Idaho. The trimmer runs good, it is light weight. problem with this trimmer is that the trimmer line will not extend with either a replacement head or a rewound replacement head. You have to stop when trimmer line needs extended, shut off equipment and take trimmer head off and rewind then reinstall and then go back and cut until trimmer head needs to be extended again. tThen do it all over again. For the price of the Trimmer its not worth it. The money I spent should be refunded so I can go buy a better brand, just not a Stihl.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Product, Great Price I bought the least expensive trimmer I could find from Stihl. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the trimmer works considering I just needed a small trimmer for my yard. Great balance, comfortable to use, compact design.Con - doesn't hold a ton of fuel.Pro - remains light weight even when full of fuel.Con-small head does not hold a ton of linePro-compact design with dual line feed knocks out a lawn quickly. Starts very easy and is just a great trimmer for such an inexpensive tool.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from This FS-38 Brushcutter was a Lemon I still maintain STIHL builds quality products. But every now and then you get one that's a little under the weather. I purchased my FS-38 Brushcutter in the summer of 2017, and up until this purchase had only been around what STIHL is famous for; their chainsaws. I purchased this item at a Big R in Dumas, TX some 80+ miles away from my home. The store performed its standard quality control over the trimmer. It ran, and out the door it went. Now I've handled plenty of these in the past but this thing never received the mixed fuel through its system like it should, so never ran like it was supposed to. But low and behold, the choke lever broke the very first day. The trimmer has yet to be taken back, thinking I'll get someone else to fix it here at home, if not myself.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Never works This is my second one and second mistake. I figured I would try again, use the best gas and oil the stuff made by Sthil premix 93 octane. From 1st day of purchase. After using 1 time and using all gas, it won't start. off too the shop later fuel line is clogged. I get charged even though I used 90 octane non ethanol fuel. Next time it won't start, things need to be adjusted. Use it 1 time, go to start it again, it starts and dies, won't run more then 5 seconds. I have a FS 38 and as far as I am concerned the thing is a lemon. No matter how well I take care of it, it won't work. Buy an electric trimmer. IF this thing was an airplane engine I would have been dead from the start.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from this product would be good if it had clockwise rotation If you are right handed with the counterclockwise rotation of the cutter head you will receive all the trimmings right back at you. Its strictly amazing they allow this to happen. I attempted to take it back but it was beyond the time allowed..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from highly recommend this little trimmer is just what i needed ,a break from my big 4 stroke Troy-Bilt it has all the power i need yet light enough that i can "one hand" it needed. The store i bought it from Sladek Hardware in Independence Mo. went over everything i needed to know about it, Best thing since i bought a gallon of Moto-mix i got a 5 year warranty

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Suitable for small area only, weak in power. From Stihl I would expect way more.Basic model but I won't recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from it was what o needed for the job So far have had no trouble, I do think the gallon of gas mix I got for 30 bucks was a bit steep but if it gives me a better warranty that's what I wanted. So far the trimmer has done what I wanted it to do.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great product except for cutting head. I wish I had read all of the negative reviews for this product regarding the cutting line head. It's the worst I've ever used. Won't advance and limited line capacity. I bought the unit after talking with the dealer sales person. I also wish he had explained the difference between this and the next step up was more than just fuel capacity. I can't even upgrade the cutting head. Poor choice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This product is easy starting. Does the job of edging. I personally would prefer a straight shaft edger for the type of edging that I do. however the FS 38 does a good job of edging and is easy to use. I have to tap it at least twice to get the string to advance. Over all a good buy for the money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Won’t start Bought this trimmer two weeks ago. Followed the starting procedure. The trimmer would not start. It makes no attempt to start. Took the plug out and it was dry. A friend managed to get it started once. I used it one time worked great. Today I got it out and tried to start it. Once again it won’t start. Doesn’t even attempt to start. The start button is on so that is not the problem. I bought a Stihl thinking it was a good product. I really regret purchasing it,

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to use I have had this trimmer for 4 years, I have not had any problems with it. I always use mid-grade gasoline and the Stihl oil. I am a 63y.o. woman and if I pull the rope 3 times and if it doesn't start, I move the choke and will start after 2-3 pulls. Starts up right after winter. I put a shoulder strap on it to help with holding the trimmer. I recommend.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from will not start I bought this because my neighbor recommended. He has used Stihl for at least the last 12 year of his mowing service and his city job. I have used this weed eater maybe 11 times. I have ran it this spring with new gas with no problem. Tried starting a couple days ago and it is completely unresponsive. it is like the on/off button is in off position. My neighbor tried starting as well and replaced spark plug but still have nothing. Wish I would have read reviews before buying. I have had for about 8 months but not sure if it is under full warranty or not?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Completely unsatisfactory I have had this trimmer for two years and to say that it works poorly would be to imply that it works at all. The trimmer head will not advance line no matter how many times I take the head apart and rewind the string. I will never buy a trimmer from Stihl again under any circumstances.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Garbage Have had multiple trimmers and decided to buy a Stihl because you get what you pay for. Don’t bother...it is basically the same st the others with a different cover on it. Lasts for about 3 years and turns to junk.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from light and easy to use Bought this product as a Birthday Gift for my 13 year old Granddaughter, she loves to weed-eat and makes extra spending money helping out elderly neighbors in the neighborhood. It has been a great product like any other Stihl product I have owned, I personally have a strait shaft trimmer and a Stihl chainsaw, both are well over 10 years old and running strong. Their are cheaper products on the market and you might save 20 or 30 dollars but they never seam to last more than 1 or 2 seasons, Stihls will last, if you just use stihl oi and properly store the product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Performed well for 3 seasons I'm a homeowner with a standard residential lot. Used this unit for 3 seasons (approximately 6-7 months each season) to just trim the edges of my lawn. For this application it has worked very well with no issues. This season during my first use the bearing in the trimmer head failed and melted the surrounding plastic parts. With the light use it received I feel this type of failure does not speak well for a STIL product. My dealer estimated the repair will cost almost the same as buying a new unit ( which he recommends I do). Previous trimmers I have owned lasted far longer and I normally sold them in garage sales when I was done.
